New Heden is a recent project that takes a vacant lot in Sweden and transforms it into a mixed-use, sustainable city. This project, by Kjellgren Kaminsky Architects, is in a way creating a city inside of a city. This underutilized site was once a paved parking lot and football fields but the redesign will have apartments, parks, and shops.

Shanty towns are nothing new in large cities with little (enforced) regulation, but this is something you have to see to believe: everything from small shacks to multi-story structures, individual buildings to entire villages, all spread out in organic mazes over the rooftops of apartment structures and skyscrapers throughout Hong Kong – a set of smaller communities within the larger surrounding city.

Weathered wood and concrete, rusted metal and rustling wild grass – nothing about this winding rooftop deck viewed from within suggests it could not be the back porch of a European country home. Nothing, that is, until you catch glimpses of the marvelous Manhattan skyline in the background.
